Humidity Controlled Grille
Is a demand controlled exhaust ventilation
grille that automatically modulates the exhaust airflows in response to the
relative humidity of the room in which it is located. Designed for
mechanical exhaust systems in homes and institutional dwellings, this terminal
permits airflow directly proportional to the humidity level, responding to the
presence and activity level of the occupants of the space.
The stale air is exhausted from bathrooms,
laundry, kitchens, rooms with specific pollutants, through the exhaust grilles (HCG),
by a central exhaust fan.
This control of the airflow rate according to
the occupancy and use of the room permits one to ventilate when and where it is
necessary, responding to the health and comfort requirements of the occupants,
contributing to the maintenance of the building by reducing moisture damage with
proper humidity levels, while reducing energy costs by avoiding unnecessary
ventilation. Fresh air in a complete humidity controlled ventilation system is
provided in each main living space, bedrooms, offices, etc. by fresh air inlets,
or a separate supply ventilation system. Transfer grilles or door undercuts
permit air circulation from the main living areas to the rooms with specific
pollutants (bathrooms, cooking areas, laundry rooms, etc.)
Applications:
The use of humidity controlled exhaust grilles
used in commercial applications is recommended in buildings where the relative
humidity is a representative indicator of the physical occupancy of the
individual rooms, which are primarily institutional and apartment/condominium
living units, and single family homes with radiant or baseboard heating. As used
in a complete system of mechanical exhaust, the HCG is particularly adapted to:
- Dormitories
- Retirement centers
- Nursing homes
- Hotels and motels
- Shower and locker rooms in schools, office
buildings, exercise rooms, etc.
Advantages:
The HCG provides effective ventilation with:
- Energy conservation by demand controlled
ventilation
- Comfort and quality of air
- Reduced moisture and condensation damage to
the building
- Extremely low sound levels
- Simple maintenance: all functioning parts
are easily removed and designed to permit cleaning in a dishwasher
- Large range of pressure for the design
airflow rates: from 0.3—.6 in. wg. (70- 150 Pa)
The HCG is composed of:
- A face cover in white ABS plastic
- A white grille
- A duct connection (for 3” or 5” duct), with
a brush gasket to provide a tight seal
- A humidity sensitive activator, in nylon
ribbon, that expands and contracts in response to the relative humidity of the
space
- Dampers mechanism(s) connected to the nylon
elements by a mechanical linkage, so as to operate the dampers in direct
proportion to the humidity level
of the space
- Timer models have a motorized actuator to
open the damper, for 20 to 25 minutes of higher airflow. Requires 9 v.
battery, or optional 12
VAC Power Pack.
- Timer models require a separate momentary
contact switch.
